Just started working on the set for the stop-motion animated short I'm working on with Brian Parker, and his team. This is a dream of mine, and it's a toss up between the level of anxiety, and sheer joy. I'm designing all of the puppets, and doing the art for the set! It's so much fun playing with someone else's money. I'm very thankful for this opportunity! Stay tuned. We should be done filming in a couple of weeks!

I just asked Ron Swarner about doing the cover with these puppets that I have been obsessing on. I told him I had a Zombie puppet that I had just used for the Artbus buttons and asked if he would be interested in a photo/ 3-D illustration for the cover and he agreed. I text Jason Ganwich and asked him if he would be interested in taking the photo, but we only had one day. He said yes and that it sounded like fun. Later he told me it was just because my puppet was so awesome. He said if the puppet wasn't so good he would have told me to F*%# off! He came over and it was one of the most fun experiences ever. It didn't just feel like we got the job done, but it felt like the genesis of a new level, and I can't wait to explore what we could do together!

Posable Puppets!

So I have become obsessed with the world of posable puppets. I have always played around with puppet heads, and tried my hand at making a few marionettes, but the posable puppet world has swallowed me whole, and here are some examples:

I created Williams for the Tacomas, Art at Work month "You'll Like Tacoma"campaign.

Since I've been making these puppets I've got a deal to make a stop motion short. The short will be a collaboration between me and Brian Parker. We created the story together and I will be making all of the puppets and sets with some help from the crew Brian has assembled. Stay tuned...

Mural at the Northwest Best Dispensary

I got the job of doing a mural in the Northwest Best Dispensary in the Embellish building. The only stipulation was that I incorporate their logo. So I made the logo the focal point of the painting.

First I scanned in their logo from the business card, and deleted everything but the logo.

Then I added it to the design that was to the scale of the wall, and put a grid onto it.

I transfered the drawig onto the wall and roughly spray-painted the purple background.

The I painted it with one color of green latex.

...and that was a wrap.

Street Sign Project- Tape Networks on King 5

I went down to the old Elks building yesterday to meet my friend Dan Martin from the Street Sign Project. He was planning on doing a huge duct tape installation, and asked if I would help out.

It was really fun to see the drab grey wall turn into this network of colors. It was also cool to here him explain his ideas. You can check it out tonight on King 5 at 5pm.

If you haven't already, you should check out the Street Sign Projects facebook page . They don't only highlight projects they're working on, but interesting street art from around the world. They also encourage everyone and anyone to participate. So go get some duct tape!

So I was clickin' over to the New Frontiers facebook page to write a short message saying "Give me my credit card back" when I noticed that their latest update said:

I thought to myself, Oh Damn! That's crazy!

My friend Geoff had given me all the Ulrich Schnauss music he had, and I loved it. He makes electronic music, that is very cinematic. It is a perfect soundtrack/background music for any type of activity I do, but I would religiously play it when I was riding my bike. Just cruisin' through the city observing the buildings, people, powerlines...while Ulrich scored the whole adventure from a small pod in my pocket.
I couldn't wait! I called Geoff and told him the news.
An excited "Nuh-Uh" was all he could say. I agreed it was unbelievable, but I assured him it was true.
We planned to meet there after he was done with band practice, and I was done with work. Work that is really hard to go to since I gave my two-weeks a couple days earlier.

I sped through my route, and made it home at an amazing 9:15. I threw on a different shirt and shoes, ate a medicinal cookie (my asthma was acting up) and headed down to the New Frontier to see what's up.

The first person I encounter there is Tim Kappler. Tim is a local artist that I run into from time to time. I like his artwork, and he's a fun person to hang out with. I ran into him at a bar once and we swapped sketchbook pages. I got this drawing out of the deal, and I was stoked.

We had a conversation about how we had both came without anything to draw on, or with for that matter, and it didn't take long before I ran out to my car/junk drawer and found a couple pens and some paper plates. Tim made these drawings...

The whole night was awesome.

Ulrich played an hypnotic one song set accompanied by a video of footage all shot from a car driving around. It was crazy because it was the same visuals I would have riding my bike around.

Filthy Rich

I was asked to be part of a "food" themed show at the Greenwood Collective in Seattle. I had an idea to make a sleazy rich dude, reminiscent of an old photo I saw a long time ago of Dave from Daves Steakhouse on broadway. In the photo, that one of his waitresses showed me, Dave was on a boat with his arm around two slutty looking chicks, clutching an 80's fake breast in each hand. The picture changed slightly from idea to sketch, but it kept the same general idea.

So first I sketched it out

Then I scaled it up on plywood.

I cut it out with a jigsaw, and sanded the edges.

I was finishing it the day of the show opening, so I didn't have time to execute the piece with the style that I usually use (covering it with black gesso and color pencil). I decided to just use the black gesso as line work, like an ink drawing.

I erased some of the pencil lines, and coated it in polyurethane.

So I got the job of making the Puget Sound Pizza (PSP) Daily Special board, and decided to pitch the idea of a giant cut out rat. Some of the employess thought that was a little too over the top, but when I brought the idea up with the owner Martin he was stoked. So I got busy with a pen and some PSP coffee.

I sketched the final design onto a piece of plywood during a demonstration on how to scale up your design, for the Tacoma Mural Program.

Then I cut it out with a jigsaw and sanded the edges.

I painted it with spray paint, blank and white Gesso, and color pencils. Painting the chalkboard part with chalkboard paint, and sealing the rest of it with spray on polyurethane.

Rake song by the Decemberists

These are five separate illustrations I did to illustrate the Rake Song by the Decemberist.

The song tells the story of a man that gets married only to have his wife start "spilling out babies". When his wife dies with the fourth child during birth, he is stuck with the three other "little pests". To free himself from this burden he murders all the remaining children. He kills the littlest girl by feeding her foxglove, the next he drowns in the bath, and the eldest son is beaten to death and his body burned.

In a later song on the album (Hazards of Love) the children starting hauntingly singing to their father.

Here are the lyrics:

True Grit-Tacoma OK's Digital Billboards

When Clear Channel did their visual attack on the city back in 2007 by having every billboard say simply "Constitutions Matter" is when I noticed how many billboards there are in Tacoma. Some vigilantes took it upon themselves to deface the billboards.
Time has passed and the City has decided to compromise, and take down 53 of the billboards, but in return Clear Channel will be allowed to install 10 digital billboards.

How does the mellow drummer from Humble Cub, basist for Tallest Tree, and solo member of Atrophy Wife contribute to Tacoma's visual art community?

The self proclaimed "staple-gun master" posts his cardboard creations like missing cat flyers on wood surfaces all around your fair city.

Reminders of love, and quarky thoughts or ideas for others to find and take home, free of charge.

Geoff went through a faze of meticulously creating these color grids that he would staple to old buildings.

These things had the longest runs I have ever seen in Tacoma street art. It was like the property owner couldn't even see them. No need to buff invisible graffiti.

While describing these pieces during his Pecha Kucha presentation at the Tacoma Art Museum (9-16-2010), he said,

"I thought it would be funny if I gave them color chip options."

If you hear about Geoff having an art show, check it out. It's the only chance you'll have to buy his artwork. Otherwise you'll have to find some.

Bike Jump -Gaytron the Imploder August 21 2010 a success

Galen McCarty Turner is a local artist turned daredevil. He performed his spectacular "Bike Jump" this last Saturday August 21 2010 despite the arrival of the Tacoma Police Department.
There were boooos heard coming from the 200 plus crowd as the police cars plugged the top end of the alley/runway. Patricia Lecy Davis lobbied with the police and came back yelling "Galen you got ten minutes!!!"
The neon wall was illuminated, and a roar of satisfaction and defiance bellowed from the normally silent alley of 6th and I street. Time was running out.
Once he quickly made his transformation into "Gaytron the Imploder" by climbing into his costume (a Carhart onsie with reflective lightning bolts on the crotch and safety helmet with camera, fireworks, and signage by the one and only Chris Sharp) he was ready for take off. The illegal fireworks that were attached to his bike and helmet were lit directly in front of the cops. He turned and gave the them the thumbs up, and started to pedal hard towards the 90,000 volt wall of rare stimulated gases.
As he exploded off of the 4 inch ramp, through 200 ft of neon, and at least 1ft high into the Tacoma evening sky, you could sense the feeling of hope for Tacomans everywhere flying along side our hero in the wave of broken glass and celebratory screams.
Soon after the bike tires touched down, and Gaytron was done performing his victory dance, almost everyone dispersed. The remnants of the wall were quickly taken away. The alley was meticulously swept by multiple volunteers. The police left (after one of them asked how he could find this on youtube).
The alley was deserted, except for a single candy wrapper slowly scratching it's way threw. It was like nothing had even happened, but something definitely had.

When I first saw this rope swing all I thought was
ROPE SWING, ROPE SWING!!!!!!
As I ran up the hillside gripping the rope with one hand Gautier, Fat Beavers Drummer, said "You should sit on it."
Like I'm gonna do it the French way.

I grab on with just my hands. "Like a man" I think to myself as I propell myself down the hill and out into the air.

In a hurry to show Gautier that I had, had my share of successful rope-swing rides in the past,and I don't need a tutor, I failed to take into consideration my trajectory. On the return trip I had to use my feet to avoid bouncing my face off of the tree. Now spinning uncontrollably I have just enough momentum to touch down on the hill. Barely hanging on my feet only touch home-base for three or four awkward tip toe steps before I take off again, but only hanging on with fingers this time. I reach the peak thinking of how stupid I'm going to look falling 15 feet onto my backpack. My backpack with my good camera in it.

Somehow I made it all the way back, and I'm still amazed that human fingers can do that.

As I rejoiced on my return home like a soldier that hates war, Gautier grabs the rope. Hops onto the knot while he takes off as if was his old rope swing from the ravine behind his house, and I can't even watch as he swings to and fro like a content parrot.

"Secrets of the Beach" tour Guitar Maniacs

This is the guy that was working at Guitar Maniacs when we visited.I think his name is John. He was one of the people on the trip that astounded me when he started fluent conversation in French with Fat Beavers. At one point he yelled out "...LICK MY ASS..." in the middle of a story, in a different voice, in English, and then went back to telling the rest of the story in French. I asked them what he said and all I remember from the story is:

Bride - Convertible - "LICK MY ASS" ...
I think I successfully blocked out the rest. Feel free to fill in the blanks. That's why I added the mostly true to the title.

Eric got his guitar fixed despite the bad language, and Ryan was immortalized as the MUSICLORD.

Playing the Fool-Process

I decided to make this drawing I had into a painting. I started by spray painting this gradient onto the panel.

Then I drew a sketch that was to scale on brown paper, and cut it out. I used this cut out for placement on the panel, and to trace the silhouette.

I fill the silhouette with black gesso, and begin to color in the characters.

The girl character didn't look like the right girl character so I redid her,
and started on the background.

Polished it up, and called it done.
"Playing the Fool"

"Playing the Fool"
Based on the age old story of reuniting with an X-girlfriend. The lightning represents the turmoil in the past, and being under the bridge represents the feeling of hiding from all the people you told this would never happen. The title "Playing the Fool" comes from the question of what each persons motives are. It depends what angle you see it from, who the fool is.
I still can't figure it out.

King 5 news was at my house

Meg Coyle from King 5 News came to my house, with her cameraman, to interview me about the cities "Spaceworks" program.

After they were done interviewing me I told the news team that one of my roommates were out of town, and how my other roommate was saying that the first roommate was going to be bummed because she didn't get to clean the house before TV cameras came in. Meg Coyle said "What does she think I'm going to do? The white glove dust test?"

The funny part was that, that was exactly what me and my roommate were joking about the night before.

Before they left they let me direct them in this photo for my traveling roommate. They were both really cool, and my roommate was freaked out when she returned home, and I showed her this...

My friend Jeff works at a metal recycle plant on the tideflats. He picture messaged me this picture of a sign that I had put a sticker on three years prior.

Some tweekers had brought it in, and he had recognized the biter. It's a small tweeker filled world.

I noticed these postings all around
the construction sites.

So I created this image of "Bill"
to turn into a sticker to post
above the posting.

Well I never got around to getting it printed
while I was there. So when I got home, instead of forgetting
the whole plan,
I quickly made myspace friends with a band
called "Post No Bills", and posted my Bill.

I felt a little better, and at least it didn't go to waste.

Stuck for 3 years

Nays (my girlfriend), and I were driving by a convenience store where I had stuck a sticker three years prior. We pulled in to check the damage. I thought he would be long gone...

But he wasn't. Well...

The funny part about this is that the box has been sitting there for three years unused. I'm suprised theres not more drawings on it. Three Years ago there wasn't one mark on it.OK well maybe one.

True Grit "Takes Money to Make Money" Process

The True Grit comic for March titled "It Takes Money to Make Money", came from this drawing that I did for a show at Mad Hat Tea Co. called "Love, Crooks, and Creeps".

At first I thought I would make the actors a couple. A girl with her new "Bad Boy" boyfriend, i.e. The Fonz, or Dallas Winston (The Outsiders)

Bad Boy: Wanna grab a bite to eat?
Girl: I only have a couple dollars.

-second frame-
Bad Boy: Listen sweetheart, when your
with me...

-third frame-
Bad Boy: ...that's all you need!

I didn't like the way the couple idea was working out, so I
switched the story to three homeless guys. Whenever I
think of homeless people, I think of "Blanketman". At the time of this picture
this was his house. He would sleep on the stairs. I offered him one of those twelve hour
heat packs one night in the middle of winter, and he solemnly declined.

At first I was going to place them under an overpass,
but why would a businessman be walking in that area?
I decided to forget about the setting for a minute,
and figure out the characters.

I sketched out all the characters,
and laid out the composition first.
Then I colored each piece separately on black paper,
scanned them in, and arranged them in Photoshop.

I still needed a background so I took a picture of this building, at the right perspective to fit in my composition.

I did a quick line drawing that I colored in photoshop
for the background

I added graffiti and stickers from some of my personal favorites for my final touch,
and there it is:

Starheadboy is a very prolific Seattle Artist who moved there from Tacoma. The overwhelming saturation of Starheadboy stickers in the Seattle area is amazing, not to mention other cities, states, even countries He reminds me of a happy human copy machine that, instead of making copy noises, just says "Good Times!" every time there is a successful duplicate. -Wonder Creature
Wonder Creature was a character that was wheat pasted, drawn, and stuck around Tacoma some years back. This goofy creation was one of my favorites, and I added it to this comic in hopes of re-inspiring the artist to do more. I miss Wonder Creature, and from what I've heard I'm not the only one.

-Deal One
Deal is a Tacoma artist that has been creating top notch art for a large part
of the last two decades.From designing tattoos, to murals, to canvases. He has done it all with skill and originality

-Plus One R.I.P.
Plus is a local legend among graffiti writers, and artists in the Pacific Northwest. He was a fun loving person that found it easy to get a laugh. With spray paint he was a precise draftsman who enjoyed the symmetry of his name. Often he would show up to paint his piece with only half a sketch, that he would flip so it was symmetrical, and make small adjustments so that it represented the right letters. Thanks for the obvious inspiration Plus. R.I.P.

What is Pecha Kucha?

Pecha Kucha (ペチャクチャ^?), usually pronounced in three syllables as "pe-chak-cha", is the onomatopoeic Japanese word for the sound of conversation. The equivalent English term is "chit-chat".

Pecha Kucha Night was devised in 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Tokyo's Klein-Dytham Architecture (KDa), as a way to attract people to Super Deluxe, their experimental event space in Roppongi.^[1] Pecha Kucha Night events consist of around a dozen presentations, each presenter having 20 slides, each shown for 20 seconds. Each presenter has just 6 minutes 40 seconds to explain their ideas before the next presenter takes the stage. Conceived as a venue through which young designers could meet, show their work, exchange ideas, and network, the format keeps presentations concise, fast-paced and entertaining.

In 2004 PKN began running in a few cities in Europe, and has since spread virally since has become a worldwide phenomenon, now running in more than 260 cities in almost every corner of the globe.

This picture of Frank C. Ross was taken in 1891, the same year he sold the Tacoma and Lake City Railroad to the Union Pacific Railroad for $153,000. When Ross celebrated his 80th birthday, March 3, 1938, he was still championing development of the tideflats, which he had proposed 50 years before.

This picture and small caption was the inspiration for this piece titled Mr. Furr.

Recently I was credited for creating this "Calculator BOOBS" magnet art.

The truth is that Galen McCarty Turner created these sculptures using silkscreens of Robin Kimmerlings artwork. He has made some featuring Jeremy Gregory, and Noah Struthers artwork also, but the "Calculator BOOBS" is Robins.

Boing Boing

This is "Boing Boing". I met this guy when I was in first grade. This picture was taken in 1995 when he was on his pogostick kick. He would pogostick (as a form of transportation) over to my house to hang out. It would take him forever to arrive, and I would always have to give him a ride home.It was all worth it just to watch him approach, hair bouncing in the wind, a look of pain and passion in his eyes, as he polka dots the sidewalk like a giant bouncy ball.
With that kind of determination I often wonder what he's up to today.
Thanks for the memories "Boing Boing". I hope you bounced your way to the top!

This is Myrtle Corbin the "Four Legged Girl", and an idea I had for a painting of a "Four Legged Girl" performing a tap dance with the lesser developed legs. It seems like she would make more money, even though she made a great deal of money. Her family was well off due to her handicap. The parents were so happy with their daughters earnings that they were rumored to have had five more children trying for another "Four Legged Girl"...or boy...or hermaphrodite which would probably bring in the most money.

In my painting, "Four Legged Tap-dance", I picture the performer having a dress rehearsal by herself. Not quite comfortable with her developing talents.

This is Galen, and "Knotty Man".

Galen was a little man that would hang out at Gypsy Lilies store around the corner from my old studio on 6th ave. I was working on the sideshow freaks series and I needed a model for "Knotty Man". I ran into Galen who asked for a cigarette (which seemed like a greeting in his language). I dont smoke but I bummed three off my girlfriend, and asked him if I could take some pictures of him in return. I said that I would make him younger to balance out the fact that I was adding these boils all over his body. He didn't really get what I was saying, but he said yeah and quickly scurried away to chain smoke. I went back to the studio, happy with my newly acquired reference.

A couple of weeks ago Gypsy Lily sent me a message with a strange request. She informed me that Galen had passed away, and that she was wondering if she could borrow the "Knotty Man" for display at Galens funeral. She said that he was so proud of that picture, and would carry this little print of it with him and tell the story to people.

I said Yes of course.

That was the first time I've shown work at a funeral.

I applied for a job at Trader Joe's as the sign artist. It was perfect for me. I would get paid to practice for my personal artwork.I thought I had it, but never even got a call. I couldn't believe it.I already pictured myself in the shirt, scribbling with full benefits. When I was going over what images I gave to them I realized that I hadn't removed this drawing. I added it on purpose thinking that it's a good drawing, and not thinking that the themed, family grocery store probably wouldn't be into frontal nudity or urination. I decided on deleting it from my submission, but simply forgot. I laugh at myself shamefully whenever I picture the "Captain" (the name Trader Joe's uses instead of manager) looking through my submissions, and stopping at that one. I want to know how long he looked at it, and I also want to know what his face looked like, and what he said, if anything, out loud to himself.
I called them,and asked about the job.They informed me that the position was filled.

My girlfriend used to nanny these twins, and she would tell me how they would communicate or "twin talk". That gave me the idea for the Mertwins sticker that was later used for a skateboard graphic.

This is a sketch that I did of my friend and his wife. His wife was giving him a haircut, and when she realized I was drawing them she said "Don't draw my head...you're going to make me ugly. So I didn't draw her head, but I didn't like the headless barber in my sketchbook, so I drew it in later from memory. I think it turned out pretty good for no reference.

Built In Treasure

My room mate found this can of treasure built into the wall of a room in our house. From the dates on the money it seems it was put there in the mid- 60's. There was $106 in the can, but some of the coins are worth up to $175 (in slightly circulated condition). When he knocked on my door in the middle of the night I would have never guessed it would be because he found treasure in the house!

This is the coin he gave me for sharing the experience.
